VISION: 

     The vision of the Nightingale Elementary School is to educate all students in a positive, supportive and safe learning environment whereby students will achieve a higher level of academic performance, learn to work cooperatively, reason critically, develop a positive self-image and cultural pride and function effectively in the community as they work toward the goal of becoming independent, lifelong learners and thus contribute to the broader society.


MISSION: 

Our Mission is to provide an academic program that supports all of our students through collaborative planning, continuous professional development, and active teaching that emphasizes reading and mathematics in an atmosphere of shared leadership. We acknowledge individual differences by using best practices, diverse instructional strategies
and the use of data to analyze and improve instructional practices in the classroom.

1.    Received the Illinois Reading First Grant for use with Grades K, 1, 2, and 3.
2.    Developed an intervention program as an intermediate step for students being referred to  the Case Manager.
3.    Seven Teachers are taking part in the National Board Certification Program.
4.    Twenty-one Teachers are taking part in the “Teaching All Teachers About Transition” Program for their ESL endorsement and/or Masters Degree through the University of  Illinois at Chicago.
5.    Several teachers have been awarded: Chicago Foundation for Education Grants  and  Rochelle Lee Grants.
6.    The First Annual Nightingale Conference – speakers on topics such as: gangs, special education intervention strategies, bilingual interventions, behavior management, etc
7.    School-wide book fairs are very successful and supported by the parents to bring reading materials into the home.


8.    Using books on tape for our special education and bilingual students.
9.    Special education referrals are completed in a timely manner – 100% compliance with evaluations & annual reviews.
10.   Career Day, Curriculum Fair, International Week were very successful.
11.   Accelerated Math, Math Facts in a Flash& Accelerated Reading programs in place.
12.    Transitioning bilingual students into English reading in second grade.
13.    Extra curricular activities such as: basketball, volleyball, drama club,etc.
14.    Using math & reading journals in the primary grades
15.    Eliminating departmental in grades 5 & 6 – allows for more time on task.
16.    Heterogeneous groupings of students at all grade levels.
17.    Purchasing of  English Grammar Books at each grade level and new Math books & manipulatives at the Primary Grade levels.
18.    Received matching Library Grant total of $4,000.
19.    More teachers using electronic grade books
20.    Calculators purchased for grades 3 – 8 and staff development provided for all teachers.
21.    Greater use of word walls, rubrics, requiring students to answer in complete sentences.
22.    Approved Technology Plan.
